WDL Winter 2015 / A+ for activity
« on: January 25, 2015, 09:12:22 AM »
Last night, I proceeded to practice with my WDL team as usual, and I noticed something very interesting. Earlier that night, there was a huge priv going on, with an average of 16 people in it, but what really caught my eye is what took place after that.

Odamex servers:

TeamSpeak server:

Including my own team, which started to practice right after those screenshots were taken, that's a total of 5 WDL teams practicing at once. And allow me to remind you, we're still in the pre-season! Last summer, some teams didn't even bother practicing until the first week started, and even afterwards, most teams only practiced twice per week or so. This is a clear contrast from back then, and obviously, this is the first time the league's teams have ever reached this peak of activity. Congratulations to all teams for putting in such hard work from day 1 and reaching new heights of skill (SUC also had their share of practice so far), and I hope to see this continuing on through the season!

WDL Discussion / How to keep your IP private on QuakeNet IRC
« on: December 28, 2014, 02:07:34 PM »
On the QuakeNet IRC, where all NADA and WDL activity takes place, if you are a paranoid one like me, who feels uncomfortable having your IP address made public to everyone around you (which may or may not include malicious individuals) then you're in luck! You can hide your IP by setting your own hostmask in just two steps.
  • Create an IRC account with Q. Follow the instructions in this link: https://www.quakenet.org/help/q/how-to-register-an-account-with-q
  • You must set two commands to be executed as soon as you connect to the network, before you join any channels. Most IRC clients have a feature for setting up connect commands. The commands are as follows:
        /msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org auth <username> <password>
        /mode <nickname> +x
It's worth noting that you can have a different nickname from your username without facing any problems. The first command logs you into the account you set up, and the second command gives you the +x flag, which hides your IP address with a hostmask if you're logged in an account, so your hostname will look like this, for example: [Zakken] (~You@SoulSucka.users.quakenet.org), instead of this: [Zakken] (~You@192.168.1.1). And with that, you're pretty much set! ;D

WDL Summer 2014 / Summer 2014 Hall of Fame
« on: September 20, 2014, 08:51:52 AM »
The first season of WDL is over, and I'd be happy to talk about all of the players who left many good contributions on the league's games, among a few other places. IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not an official-level thread, and it only reflects my own views on players.

[SUPER] Rude: It was the 2nd time Rude participated in a CTF league, and he decided to become a captain quite early in comparison. It's certainly not an easy task to be a good captain, and it shows as he screwed up in the auction draft and had to make do with a low-budget team, and having Capo in the team was sure to give him lots of headache throughout the season. Despite these misfortunes, his quickly-rising skill, his perfect attendance and his honest attempts to keep a crumbling team together have shown to be very respectable traits, and he'll be a force to be reckoned with next season, most likely.

[SDC] Yorick: Easily one of the season's most notable starters, Yorick stole the spotlight several times during the season. His well-practiced runs have guaranteed him scores against almost all teams, no matter how sturdy they were, nearly rivaling other high-scoring players such as Ralphis and Pollution. Some of his well-timed assists and good fragging abilities have turned probable losses into huge upsets in SDC's favor. He shall be one of WDL's signature runners if he is to prolong his attendance.

[SUC] Starrk: Another great starter, coming from the grounds of ZDaemon, Starrk performed good defense for an otherwise aggressive team. His passion for the game and his desire to win contributed lots to improving his skill level in a short time, and while his defense still has a long way to go, his better judgement greatly helped SUC in times of need, giving them the edge against unsuspecting opponents. The league greatly benefits from having positive, non-toxic players such as him.

[SUC] RottKing: Despite being mostly quiet in the WDL channel and new players not knowing him that well, Rott has had a lot of CTF league experience and always delivered an enjoyable experience to both the players in his teams and to those who watched his games. He has been in the Doom community for nearly as long as Ralphis, and he is remembered as one of the original aimbots along with others like Tai, and it was a pleasure to see that, after a good few years of inactivity, Rott was still able to perform greatly for his team. I hope I'm not the only one wanting to see more Rott next season.

[ADD] Water: Along with Tony and (obviously) Ralph, Water was one of the key individuals in making the first season of WDL a success, thanks to his help in organizing and mostly helping Tony with designing the site. There is a lot more to come out soon, before the next season arrives, if all goes well. Gaming-wise, he made a really strong and impeccable draft with Tai and Dragon under his team. Few were lucky to win a round against them, and only SDC was able to play them without losing, in an utter stalemate, but having a regular season record of 4 wins and 1 tie is no mean feat. His team practiced regularly and had top-notch communications with his teammates, all of that resulting in his probably inevitable Championship victory. Hopefully he'll be met with stronger oppositions next time!

[ADD] Alt_Stab: Also a newcomer from the ZDaemon community, Alt_Stab's rookie status eventually placed him as a team's 4th player, but in hindsight, most would agree that he actually has the skills of a good 3rd player. That is not very surprising, since he allegedly had his share of CTF league experience before. From the few times that he had the opportunity to play for ADD, the team as a whole performed nearly just as good as they did with their main line-up! Evidently, Tai and Dragon played at their prime levels during the season, but Stab's contributions are not to be overlooked. Here's to hoping that he will become a team's 3rd player soon enough.

[SHQ] Wazzup: Seemingly coming out of nowhere, Wazzup hasn't shown his face in the CTF community for several years: his entry in the WDL was indeed a surprise for some and even though I don't know much about him, it was evident that he's a veteran looking forward to get back in the scene. His team unfortunately did not reach the playoffs, but it is totally a nice thing that he proved himself to be a reliable player while also remaining positive about the port and the league, both of those being virtues that not all veterans can bring themselves to have anymore.

Viewers are encouraged to comment and/or make their own halls of fame! Who do you think assisted the league in providing high-quality games?
