WDL Fall 2017 / Re: WDL 2017 FALL DRAFT - POST DISCUSSION -
« on: October 21, 2017, 12:02:22 PM »
Interesting draft that has setup what should be an interesting season. I think how this season plays out will pivot on the performance of a few key players, namely:

Denzoa
Infer
Cartel
Hirius
Razor

Curious to see how the first two weeks unfold.

I am in complete disbelief. DS was such an amazing guy, and such a great part of the community. It's awful to see you go like this, especially because it was so unexpected. You're in a better place now, may you rest in peace man.

Xen vs DS, who's got the bigger D?

These playoffs are kicking off in the form of epic rematches. SUC and REG are playing each other in back-to-back weeks following a second 3-round comeback loss for SUC in Week 5, and SXP gets a second chance to prove the double-trade was in their favor after suffering a 2-0 sweep by GPS in Week 4.

SXP @ GPS

SXP is fresh off a 2-0 sweep of HYP last week, they've been seen in the prac quite often lately and are looking quite mean. They're hungry. They want revenge against GPS for the Week 4 loss, and they want that chance to play TKV. Quite honestly I don't see GPS having a remote chance at winning on map06, so their hope lies on cashing in on that homefield advantage and winning their first two games to obtain that early lead and hold it. Zakken and Rude have both been phenomenal this season, but Bones and Dragon are an even better duo once they get started, and I don't see them falling to GPS again.

SXP 3-0-1

REG @ SUC

Even though SUC's captain created REG's homefield map, I don't see REG losing there. When it comes to map04, the same applies for REG as last week did with map29. All three of them are amazing map04 players, and their chemistry is going to absolutely earn them wins there. Map30, however, is an entirely different story. I can only assume Ralphis chose this rarely-played oddball-map because SUC has been developing some interesting strategies for this map and will attempt to use it as their ace card. But will it work? In a well-balanced game, this map is difficult to run on and will most likely lead to some low-scoring games. Ralphis and RosKing are both amazing runners, and Dranzer and Jwarrier are both very effective defenders, so this should prove to be an amazing rematch, once again game of the week for sure. In the end though, I think REG is going to pull ahead victorious thanks to some clutch performances.

REG 3-1-1

Code: [Select]
2-round win: 6 points
3-round win, enemy ties one of the rounds: 5 points
3-round win, enemy ties two of the rounds or wins one: 4 points
Tie: 3 points
3-round loss, enemy ties two of the rounds or loses one: 2 points
3-round loss, enemy ties one of the rounds: 1 point
2-round loss: 0 points

I agree with a 6-point system or something similar. I always thought it was unfair that a team who wins 2-1-0 earns the same amount of points/standing as a team who wins 2-0-1, or a team who loses 0-2-1 earning the same standings as a team who loses 1-2-0. Definitely something that should be looked into for the summer season.

It's quite ironic that the two teams who have already solidified their playoff positions will be playing each other in the final week of the regular season, while the rest of the league tears each other apart for playoff positioning. We have the invincible TKV who has yet to lose a single round, much less an entire game, facing HFM who has only won 2 out of 10 rounds in a winless season so far. There's not much to be said here, TKV will almost assuredly sweep HFM in two quick rounds to complete a perfect regular season.

TKV 2-0

In terms of playoff positioning, all eyes will be on SXP vs HYP as the winner of their game clinches a playoff seed. If HYP loses at all, they're eliminated from playoffs. If SXP loses in 2, they're eliminated. However, if SXP loses in 3 they can still fumble their way into playoffs if SUC defeats REG 2-0, just like the Detroit Lions did after losing to the Packers in Week 16 at their own stadium for the divisional title yet still rag-dolling their way into 6th seed thanks to the Giants beating the Redskins that same week. That being said, though, I think SXP will be earning their way into the playoffs by winning here this week. Dragon is an extremely good O on this map and plays it often over in Zandronum priv, which will give them the edge over HYP's fragging game. HYP is a team of incredibly talented players, but I just don't see them possessing the chemistry and organization needed to win on a map that requires a great deal of tactical defense and support such as this one.

SXP 2-0

While both teams have clinched at least 4th seed, GPS and TDT are only one point away from each other meaning their game also has major playoff implications. GPS is red-hot right now following an initially-questionable trade with SXP in Week 3, the trade seemed to pay off after taking down SUC in a brilliant 3-round comeback that same week, then making short work of the team they traded with in Week 4 sweeping SXP in two rounds. However, TDT is still arguably the second-best team in the league, despite still recovering from a crushing 2-0 loss to the seemingly-untouchable TKV in Week 3. And on this classic map, I think DS will prove to be nearly impossible to get past for GPS' offense. Zakken is a very strong D as well, but TDT's has much more offensive power than GPS does, and that will be the determining factor in winning this game.

TDT 2-0-1

For the likely game of the week, we have a team who's fighting for a first-round playoff bye, and a team who's fighting to make playoffs at all. If SUC defeats REG 2-0 here, they clinch 2nd seed and earn a free week off next week. If REG wins or ties even just a single round here, they clinch playoffs. However, if they lose in 2 rounds, they need to pray that the SXP/HYP game either ends in 2, or with SXP winning in 3. This match should be the GOTW because both teams have very solid rosters for this map, but I feel that REG has the slight upper-hand here, despite being 7 points behind SUC. RosKing is an absolute monster on this map, Jwar is an extremely effective defender here, and GobliN has *plenty* of experience on this map thanks to his LF days (;]). SUC is no slouch either though, Ralph is right up at the top of the offensive charts with Avc, and Dranzer is also extremely good on this map. The biggest factor will come down to how well Hopes/Dosu ends up supporting on this map. It will be a very good fight, and I'm expecting one of the best games of the season so far, and in the end I think REG is going to earn a much-deserved victory to cap off their regular season.

REG 2-1

Damn, if TDT and GPS would've tied their first round (which they nearly did), I would've had a perfect prediction.

Oh well, ggs to all the teams this week. Congrats REG and SXP on securing your entry into the playoffs, congrats TDT for earning a quarter-final bye, and congrats TKV on your perfect regular season!

TDT, TKV and SUC easily earn another 4 points, REG fights like hell and earns 3 points in a thriller.

SUC vs SXP

Ralph vs Bones, the ultimate classical matchup.  What a perfect way to kick off the season, there's no way this wasn't planned. If Evo ends up being active, he's going to be competing with Dastan, who has been a rising star lately, for the starter O spot. Both are great players, but will they be able to penetrate Dranzer's giant D? It's going to be tough.

SUC 2-1

HYP vs TKV

HYP in my opinion is perhaps the biggest question mark team of the league heading into the start of the season. Will doomgod Dev have fluid chemistry with Hex and Starrk? I see a lot of firepower, but I don't see a whole lot of offensive power here, but I'm hoping I could be wrong. Meanwhile TKV is looking like a monster of a team on paper. Avc is perhaps the fastest-rising player in the league and could very well be the next Jenova with his speedy running skills. Ghostkiller has the aim of an android over on Zandronum, but it remains to be seen if he can successfully transition that aim to Odamex. If he can, he will create a solid wall of a defense that HYP's lacking offense is going to get very frustrated with. Jake is an amazing all-around player with solid aim that will be able to clear out mid/D for his teammates easily. I'm interested to see how Xen fits into their roster as well.

TKV 2-0-1

REG vs TDT

I don't think it's a far stretch to say that TDT is one of the strongest teams on paper, and it's hard to imagine them not at least making playoffs. It will be a little tricky for DS with all-euro availabilities, but if he can work around that, TDT has the potential to go *very* far. With DS holding down the defense, his european offense could prove to be enormously effective. REG is no slouch of a team either though, with their first draft pick being perhaps the best player in the league. Jwarrier is an extremely effective player with strong aim and smart play, so the biggest question is how well their thirds end up performing. HTG and Goblin are both great players with assloads of potential, but how well they apply that potential to the big-leagues will be the determining factor in this game.

TDT 2-0

HFM vs GPS

HFM seems to scream heavy fragging potential, but do they have chemistry and offensive potential? This is another team that resonates with HYP in that it's unclear how well they're going to play together, but I'm hoping that KBlair's veteran mind will have some success with creating strategies to lead this team to capping flags and winning games. GPS has two extremely powerful players to come out of Zandronum, Zakken with his incredibly strong fragpower and Dragon, an extremely talented runner. The obvious line-up would have captain Stab in mid supporting these two, and I think that lineup is going to definitely live up to the phrase "flags, not frags."

GPS 2-0

Reviewing Map26 Demos like

Jesus christ, does Hulu literally add logo overlays like that to their shows? That's horrendous

27
Wumbo wins if they play Denny. Ralph's giant dick fucks Wumbo in their collective asses if they bench Denny. Zakken and co crush the literal shit out of Rude's crew in any scenario.

Whatever happened to posting results of games in their threads? Especially considering the WDL site doesn't have do specific game info (at least from what I can tell), I think it'd be beneficial to post results here like we used to back in the early IDL days. It'd really help out some of the less involved people who aren't there to know specific results like the active players.
